Steve Jobs, co-founder of technology giant Apple has passed away at the age of 56.

Apple released the information to the press, and have launched the following statement via an official site.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Not only have we lost one of the most significant figures in the technological space, but we have also lost a true philanthropist. Our thoughts are with the Jobs family, his friends and co-workers.

Steve Jobs dies at age 56 Comments

I want to change the world like you did - RIP Jobs.
I'm not afraid to admit this - I'm feeling really depressed by this news.

Heller said: I'm not afraid to admit this - I'm feeling really depressed by this news.

Same :c
I'm just liking the article, nothing more. :P

But yeah, I'm pretty saddened as well. He looked pretty unhealthy too, so it just seemed his time was almost coming to an end.
NO!!!!! :'(

I will miss him.
How did he die? Natural causes?

Kinda sucks. Didn't he retire like 2 months ago?

RIP Steve, ur genius has influenced us all.

Yeah man, that's horribly inappropriate. Jobs did many great things, he will be missed. RIP
Steve Jobs is not dead, he is now obsolete. Watch out for the new Steve Job 3GS this Winter.

An apple a day, keeps the doctor away. Try tell steve jobs that.

He died of pancreatic cancer. PC killed him

Reports are coming in that doctors tried reviving him but it turns out that the defibrillator required flash.

Steve did a lot of work in his year. Looks like Jobs done

He worked till his last breath.
I'm not sure why we have to show respect. He invented the iPod. Well done!

If people are genuinely saddened by the news, then that's fine. But to me, he wasn't a great man. He was a successful businessman.
Even more hipsters are going to use Apple products...

...now that Steve Jobs is undergroun
Rest In Peace, Steve Jobs... :'(

Me too :'(

When Michael Jackson died I was surprised, but this truly saddens me.
I'm just going to say this now to prevent any flame abuse from one another, but I'm gonna delete all the hate and pun jokes about his death. This has happened countless times with past deaths from famous people and it always caused people abusing each other because one made a joke and the other found it disrespectful.

If you want to express your grievance to the man, feel free to do so. If you don't, take it somewhere else.

WTF dude, why would you write this, may his ghost haunt you :@

i totally agree, keep it clean please...
I thought this was a discussion about Steve Jobs' death.

Why does is all have to be positive without some over-sensitive whinebag getting all defensive? Keep the jokes/hate. Delete the flames that come with it.

As long as it's on-topic, I don't really see how it's fair to delete certain posts because people MAY react to it negatively.
It's called respect.
As much as I hate apple. Im kinda sad

GreenThumb said: It's called respect.

What about it?

It's not required in this discussion. That's my point...
Still doesn't give people the right to be a total dick about it.
everyone entitled to an opinion. jokes are fine, just because you might not like them, doesnt mean they deserve to be deleted.
Too soon for jokes. The news broke today.

Jesus, what is wrong with some people. I didn't like the man, nor cared much for Apple, but still.
I don't think there's ever a time frame where jokes suddenly become appropriate or inappropriate. I don't see any issues with saying jokes (that are worth denying freedom of opinion). Saying things such as "I am happy he is dead" or "this is hilarious" don't really count as jokes. They are just plain horrible
Well this just ruined my morning :(

Also you really shouldn't be making jokes out of someones death, it's just wrong.
exactly at marge.
I will say that I didn't see anyone looking down on jokes about Osama Bin Laden.

Interesting...

i think he is being serious. it just shows how people view people differently. Osama Bin Laden could be compared to jobs, in that thousands of people looked up to him. sure he was a terrorist, but he was still well respected by certain people.
Steve Jobs die man did not that happed vary sad was age 56 not that old hope in Haven ;)

Heller said: I was disgusted at America's reaction to his death, all standing outside the White House chanting USA, USA like a pack of rednecks. Don't get me wrong, he was an evil man and I don't mind at all that he was killed, but there is a certain conduct to these matters in my opinion and death should be respected.

i agree with you heller. Death should not be celebrated, no matter who it is.

Steve jobs wasnt a leader of a mass murdering organisation tho :P
My point was that Osama Bin Laden, despite what he did, was still respected by a hell of a lot of people. Therefore, the jokes made about him should also be kept to ourselves, if it's about "respect".
People in here (the Apple channel) and posting jokes about this man on the day of his death, are flame baiting, they are looking to get a reaction, not only is it in extremely bad taste, it's also against the TOS of this site.

Um...yeah....right...

But people hate Jobs because, for whatever reason, people get emotionally worked up over products, brands. They didn't like what Apple offered. Apple never actually compromised their democracy, their free speech.

Bin Laden has people that looked up to him. They are what I call the "Taliban".

I really don't understand how you can try to say that just because people celebrated the death of a terrorist, an extremist, there is justification in mocking the death of a man THAT DID NOTHING TO COMPROMISE OUR LIVELIHOODS.

Seriously dude, I don't know why you've even made the comparison. It's mind boggling.

There goes one of the world's most creative minds today, RIP sweet prince.
Rest in peace. I feel bad whenever I hear someone die, but with Steve Jobs the only difference is I know what he looks like... it really changes your perspective. :'(

Anyways, I think people are entitled to their own opinion; however, this site is against bad mouthing of all types, be it against Osama, or Steve. Some of you guys have serious ethical problems, which is fine with me until you exhibit these traits in public. Keep your twisted minds to yourself.

If a relative of yours, or someone that you admired was to die could I make jokes about that person? Surely you'd understand if I was to laugh at your mother dying, as you know, I'm not required to show respect, and who cares if you MAY react to it negatively.
It could be Obama, my parents, or my mailman. I couldn't care less what people say about them post-death. But I'm more-or-less devoid of any actual attachment to people, so I don't count.
this feels like the thread on this

i didnt really like him but that damn cancer!! boooo!

Nothing to stop you from doing it, nothing to stop me from getting offended. That's besides the point. An admin was actually threatening to delete posts that were negative because people like you may react to it. If I were to mention the alleged child labor claims made against Apple, I would potentially have my post deleted. Do you honestly think that is fair?

Deleting posts that are on-topic, no matter how bad the taste, goes against something this website strongly champions - freedom of speech, and anti-censorship.

RIP Steve.

There's no denying the influence he had on the world, regardless of your thoughts towards him. The iPod, iPhone and iPad standout of late, but there's also his work with Pixar, the Apple II and the fact that he developed the mainstream accessible computer, allowing everyone to get online and up with the digital revolution that wouldn't be the same if there was no Mac OS X.

There is a difference though. Saying something negative about a company, that could actually be true and directly making fun of the death of someone are totally different. The latter being down right disrespectful, unnecessary and provocative.

Freedom of Speech is a phrase nothing more, nothing less. You can't say whatever you like anywhere you like without consequences.
It is sad news. I still think Apple is extremely overrated and hyped up more then anything. Although there's no doubt the influence of the iPod and iPhone really changed standards of music and mobile entertainment devices.

Moving on from the joke angle, the child labor claims paint Steve Jobs in a negative light. Again, an admin was threatening to delete posts that are hateful. It's on-topic. I fail to see what the problem is.

Azza said:

You should be able to, though. That's what forums are all about, right? Free expression? Or is it only as free as you want it to be?
Again, within reason, why the hell can't we have conflicting ideas for a topic? That's what makes forums functional.

As do I. Still, I just guess there's a time and a place, and it's probably not needed right now. It's was the same with Micheal Jackson, at the time of his death, people were willing to drop some of the controversial things they he may have taken part in in order to show respect. A time and a place.

There is always going to be a line, it's free expression to an extent, more lenient at times, less at others. Again, time and a place. If Obama was to die today and I made a racial slur towards him, it'd be looked upon much differently than if I was to say such a thing at another time.

no that didn't happen. People were making jokes left right and centre. I remember having a heated argument with rainbow6 and someone else(possibly Silence, rings a bell) when Michael Jackson died about making jokes. So so so many jokes were made. The only reason there's more people fighting now is because many people on this forum have an emotional attachment to steve jobs and his companies's products. Just because more people on here are easily offended by this topic doesn't mean freedom of opinion is any less valid.

Admins don't go deleting, this is an interesting discussion about censorship n stuff =D

So was it cancer that killed him? I think we were left in the dark a little about what was wrong with him :S
"They will love the new Iphone 4s. I bet my life on it" - Steve Jobs

I laughed when I heard this but then I realised Steve Jobs was actually an amazing person. As much as I hate apple, I felt sad when I heard this.

You can when its the internet.

@Marge yes it was Cancer. He did very well to make it this far. Pretty sure he got told he had 3 months to live in 2004. Great effort.
Its late posting this, but I was out tonight.

After I got off work I left a bunch of flowers outside the main Apple Shop in George St Sydney.

I'm not an Apple fanboy at all, I only own one Apple product, an Ipod Classic, and I felt quite out of place taking photos with my Android phone.
Steve was someone I respected with great admiration, the world wouldn't be the same without him, and we can only hope he left enough of an imprint on it so it can continue to progress without him.
My thoughts are with his family, especially his children, some of whom are far younger than I. Losing a father could never be easy.

Steve, We will miss you dearly.

dude this is amazing what you've done!
Don't give me all the credit, I didn't leave all of them, just one bunch, other people left the rest.

It actually makes me emotional seeing that.
I feel the title of this news article could have been more catchy.

Like perhaps:

Steve Jobs; Dead at 56

Or maybe:

Apple Founder Steve Jobs; Dead at 56

Or even:

Apple Founder, Creator of Those Terrible Macs, and Enemy of Microsoft Steve Jobs; Dead at 56
It is interesting how such an event brings out the best and worst in us in the way we either show compassion or contempt.
